At FD Consultants we offer a one-day conflict resolution workshop. We have divided this workshop into two half days as we are currently offering this remotely. This is a helpful workshop for managers or teams when navigating the breakdown of communication and confronting conflict. A highly stressed organisational culture can result in more grievances, ruptures in communication, and higher levels of sick leave. “This course has not only helped me to manage conflict, but also provided me with the understanding of how to reduce conflict and create a healthier organisational culture.” Most of us spend a large portion of our waking hours at work, so the quality of our working environment and relationships has a significant impact on our wellbeing. In any workplace there will be many different experiences and perspectives. We each see the world in a different way. This means we react in our own way to situations at work, which will affect the relationships we have with those around us. This diversity of experience and thinking is positive, but it can sometimes lead to misunderstanding and conflict between people. Some conflict can be constructive, such as a healthy amount of competition between team members to reach goals. But negative conflict, like bullying or personality clashes, can harm individuals and undermine teamworking. During the pandemic workplace conflict costs businesses in the U.K., £28.5 billion (Saundry, R & Urwin, 2021). This is approximately £1,000 per employee. This research highlights that 10 million people experience conflict in the workplace. Of these, over half suffer stress, anxiety or depression; 900,000 took time off work; 300,000 employees were dismissed; and nearly half a million resigned. If issues are not tackled head on at an early stage, the conflict is likely to escalate. Early intervention in conflict saves money, time and promotes a better wellbeing Our conflict resolution training provides information on the theories underpinning conflict and mediation. We share tools and understanding to increase participant’s confidence when confronting strong emotions and difficult behaviours. We identify various problem-solving approaches, explore how to overcome blocks, and create a safe space for conflict to be resolved. We have developed our own ‘SAFETY Conflict Resolution Model’ (FD Consultants, 2021). This model emphasises creating a ‘psychologically safe working environment’, where people feel able to speak up and share learning without fear of negative consequences, such as, being scapegoated or reprimanded. “I am grateful that our organisation has signed all the managers up for this course. Learning mediation and conflict resolution is very helpful in my role.” Resolving conflict can lead to creative and healthy ways of working. By asking challenging and difficult questions, it gives us the opportunity to create a fairer and more inclusive workplace.
